Precision Solder Reflow with Vulcan Ceramic Infra-Red Heaters

Our Vulcatherm Ceramic Infra-Red Heaters provide a highly controlled and efficient solution for the reflow soldering process in surface mount technology (SMT) production. These emitters are a key component in multi-zone reflow ovens. They enable consistent temperature profiles and high-quality circuit board manufacturing.

Thermal Management for Reflow Soldering

Precise temperature control is essential in electronics manufacturing to melt solder paste without damaging sensitive components. Vulcatherm heaters deliver stable, evenly distributed heat across each zone of the reflow unit:

  • Zone 1: Gently heats the solder paste to release solvents used in printing.
  • Zone 2: Activates the flux to prepare for bonding.
  • Zones 3 & 4: Gradually raise temperatures to 210–220°C, initiating the solder reflow process.

Smart Control & Quality Heating Performance

Temperature control is managed using embedded thermocouples within the heaters, which are monitored by advanced software. This allows real-time adjustment of:

  • Conveyor speed
  • Zone temperatures
  • Ramp rates (temperature change over time)

These programmable controls ensure consistent soldering and reduce the risk of thermal stress on delicate components.

Key Features of Vulcatherm Infra-Red Heaters

  • Uniform Heat Distribution – Ensures even reflow across the board, reducing defects.
  • Non-Colour Selectivity – Heaters provide consistent performance regardless of material colour or composition.
  • Reduced Rework & Scrap – Precision heating helps minimise faults, lowering costs and increasing yield.
  • Flexible Configuration – Multiple emitter types (V1 and V2, 150w–300w) allowing for customised power outputs up to 15.5 kw and 20.9 kW/m² power density.

Applications in Electronics Manufacturing

Vulcan’s infra-red reflow technology is ideal for manufacturers producing surface-mounted circuit boards, where tight thermal profiles and production efficiency are critical. These solutions are already used successfully in high-speed SMT assembly lines, supporting the needs of the electronics, automotive, and telecommunications sectors.
