Supplying a Full Tile System for a UK Waste-to-Energy Incinerator: Vulcan Refractories Delivers

Recently, we supplied a complete waste-to-energy incinerator tile system to a UK-based company, further cementing our position as a trusted supplier in the energy recovery sector.

The Role of Refractories in Waste-to-Energy Plants

A waste-to-energy incinerator recovers energy from residual waste through high-temperature combustion. These plants help divert waste from landfills while generating electricity and/or heat. However, the internal environment of an incinerator is highly corrosive, abrasive, and thermally aggressive, placing extreme demands on the lining materials.

This is where silicon carbide-based and high-alumina refractory systems are essential.

The tile system supplied by Vulcan provided:

  • Thermal insulation and resistance up to 1300°C
  • Protection against slag adhesion and alkali attack
  • Abrasion resistance to extend equipment life
  • Modular installation for reduced maintenance downtime

Understanding the balance between thermal performance and mechanical resilience is crucial in designing these systems effectively.

Vulcan’s Solution: Complete Incinerator Tile System

For this project, Vulcan supplied a full wall tile system, manufactured to the customer’s design specifications. The system included:

  • Vulcasil S75N – A high-performance silicon nitride bonded silicon carbide, known for its excellent oxidation resistance and mechanical strength
  • Vulcasil A – A dense, high-alumina product used in zones requiring superior insulation and slag resistance

These materials are proven in waste-to-energy environments, having been used in numerous projects globally for over 30 years.
