Driving Excellence from Within: Vulcan Introduces Workplace Champions

At Vulcan Refractories, our commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement goes beyond process. We’re proud to introduce a new initiative that reinforces this commitment: the implementation of Workplace Champions across key areas of our operations.

This new approach adds an additional layer of quality control and team support, empowering selected individuals to lead by example, drive best practices, and support their colleagues in maintaining Vulcan’s high standards across the board.

What Are Workplace Champions?

Champions are experienced team members who take ownership of a specific focus area: Quality, Health & Safety, and LEAN practices. Their role is to act as dedicated points of contact. They help identify improvements, provide hands-on guidance, and ensure high standards are upheld across their area of expertise.

They also act as liaisons between the workforce and management, ensuring that feedback, ideas, and concerns are heard and acted upon quickly and effectively. Most importantly, they inspire a culture of ownership and accountability at every level.

Meet the Champions

 

Left to right in the photo:

  • Lee Ratcliffe – Quality Champion
    Lee plays a key role in monitoring and promoting best practices in product quality. He ensures processes remain consistent and that all team members understand their part in maintaining Vulcan’s reputation for excellence. 
  • Ewan Clark – Health & Safety Champion
    With safety at the heart of everything we do, Ewan works closely with teams to maintain safe working environments. From day-to-day safety checks to helping educate and support colleagues, Ewan champions Vulcan’s zero-harm culture. 
  • Aaron Jones – Champion Leader
    Aaron oversees and coordinates the work of all Champions, ensuring alignment between departments. He supports communication across teams and helps drive forward shared goals in quality, safety, and process improvement. 
  • David Dale – LEAN Champion
    David supports Vulcan’s drive for continuous improvement, helping implement and maintain LEAN principles throughout production. His role ensures that we operate as efficiently and effectively as possible, with minimal waste and maximum value. 

Why This Matters

By introducing Champions, we embed our core values in daily practice. These individuals bring specialist knowledge and real-time support to the shop floor, creating a stronger connection between strategy and execution.
