Celebrating 30 Years: Stuart’s Journey with Vulcan Refractories
This year marks an incredible milestone for Vulcan Refractories as our Sales Manager, Stuart Handley, celebrates 30 years with the company. From his beginnings in production to his current role leading Sales and Marketing, Stuart’s career reflects the growth, adaptability, and culture that define Vulcan.
Starting Out at Vulcan
Stuart joined Vulcan in 1995 as Works Manager, following 10 years in the clay brick and tile manufacturing industry. His background in special shapes production provided the perfect foundation for transitioning into refractories an industry that, as Stuart explains, is never static:
“In the refractories industry, every day is a school day. Markets change, new materials are developed, new ranges of shapes are required, and it’s a constant learning process. There is never a dull moment and that’s what appeals to me.”
Milestones Along the Way
One of the defining moments of Stuart’s career came in 2013. After Vulcan was acquired by Zampell Refractories Inc. in 2012 and the site was completely redeveloped the following year.
“It was a major change for Vulcan and gave us the opportunity to put all the equipment and processes in the right place. It helped make Vulcan the 21st-century company it is today. I was proud to have been an integral part of that milestone.”
Stuart also made the significant transition from production to sales after 20 years. His product knowledge and customer focus helped him thrive in his new role, where he now oversees Sales, Marketing, and Purchasing.
Adapting to Industry Change
Over three decades, Stuart has seen both Vulcan and the industry evolve. When he started, coal-fired power stations dominated the UK market. Today, Vulcan plays a leading role in supplying products for the growing Waste-to-Energy sector. Despite competition from lower-cost imports, Vulcan has retained its strength by focusing on quality and service.
“We sell by value, not just by price. Our personal approach to customer relationships is something many larger competitors struggle to achieve.”
Team and Culture
For Stuart, one of Vulcan’s biggest strengths is its people:
“Although Vulcan is part of a larger group, it still maintains that ‘family feel’. We have a small but very experienced team who all work closely together to achieve the end goal.”
He highlights the company’s strong values, with health and safety, quality, and employee wellbeing at the core of everything Vulcan does.
Looking Ahead
As Stuart reflects on 30 years, he remains enthusiastic about the future:
“Vulcan is in a commanding position to continually maintain its role as a high-quality manufacturer of fired refractory products. We have a great team who are set to carry on adapting and improving.”
When asked what advice he would give to newcomers to the industry, Stuart keeps it simple:
“Expect the unexpected. There are continual changes, and you have to be prepared for the next one every day.”
A Personal Milestone
This year also marks Stuart’s 60th birthday a reminder of just how much Vulcan has shaped his life:
“Vulcan has been part of my daily routine for 50% of my life. You don’t stay with a company that long unless you have a passion for it and are well looked after.”
From everyone at Vulcan, we congratulate Stuart on this incredible milestone and thank him for his dedication, leadership, and contribution over the last 30 years.
