Celebrating Stuart Handley’s 40 Years in the Ceramics Industry
At Vulcan Refractories, we are proud to celebrate the career and achievements of our Sales Manager, Stuart Handley. Ceramics UK features him in their People Behind the Industry series.
Stuart has spent an impressive 40 years in the ceramics and refractory sector, including 30 years at Vulcan Refractories. Joining the business in 1995 as Works Manager, Stuart brought valuable experience from the clay brick manufacturing industry and quickly became a key figure within the company.
Over the following two decades, he developed extensive expertise in refractory manufacturing, material development, and production management. This technical knowledge later provided the foundation for his transition into sales, marketing, and business development.
One of Stuart’s most significant contributions came following Vulcan’s acquisition by Zampell Refractories in 2013. He played a central role in the redevelopment and modernisation of the site, helping transform Vulcan into the efficient, modern manufacturing facility it is today.
Throughout his career, Stuart has helped guide the business through major industry changes, including the transition from traditional coal-fired power generation to the rapidly growing Waste-to-Energy sector. His focus on quality, value, and customer relationships has helped maintain the family-oriented culture that continues to define Vulcan today.
Reflecting on his career, Stuart said:
“Vulcan has been part of my daily routine for 50% of my life. You don’t stay with a company that long unless you have a passion for it and are well looked after.”
His dedication, knowledge, and commitment to continuous improvement have made a lasting impact on both Vulcan Refractories and the wider industry.
